Plan Ahead

Trip-Planning Essentials

Visa & Entry
Travelers from Visa Waiver countries need an ESTA ($21 online, submitted at least 72 hours ahead). Non-waiver nationals must apply for a B1/B2 visitor visa, which often takes weeks to issue. Apply early — tournament-period demand will be very high.
For stays under 180 days no visa is needed for most passports. You'll get a tourist permit (FMM) on arrival, or you can complete it online before flying. Combining Mexico and US matches means separate entry authorisation for each country.
An eTA is required for visa-exempt passports ($7 CAD, online application). If your nationality requires a full visa, apply well in advance. Processing tends to be fast, with delays around large events. Each eTA is linked to a specific passport and is good for 5 years.
Currency & Costs
USD is the currency. Credit and debit cards are taken pretty much everywhere. Tipping culture is strong: 18-20% in restaurants, around $1-2 per drink at bars. Casual-restaurant meals run $15-25; fast food is $8-15. Concessions inside stadiums are significantly costlier.
The currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN). US dollars are commonly accepted near tourist sites, though peso payments get better rates. Tipping at 10-15% is standard. Local-restaurant meals run $5-10, which makes Mexico the most affordable host country. ATMs are widely available.
Pay in CAD. Card payments work everywhere, contactless included. 15-20% is the standard restaurant tip. Prices run close to US levels — about $15-25 per meal. Note that price tags in Canada don't bake in tax, meaning your bill ends up 13-15% over the menu number.
Weather (June-July)
Conditions swing widely by city. Southern venues (Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C) are hot, humid affairs. The West Coast — LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C — runs milder and drier. On the East Coast (New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C) it's warm and humid. Pack sunscreen and a hat — and stay hydrated at outdoor venues.
June marks the start of the rainy season. Mexico City's 2,200m altitude keeps daytime temperatures moderate (around 25°C), with sharp evening cool-downs. Pack layered clothes and a rain shell. Temperatures in Guadalajara and Monterrey climb to 30-33°C with more humidity. Afternoon thunderstorms are a regular occurrence, usually brief.
The Canadian summer at its finest. Around 26°C is typical for Toronto, with occasional humid stretches. Vancouver's average is about 22°C, with up to 16 hours of daylight and minimal rain. Outdoor events feel comfortable in either city. Light layers are recommended for evening kickoffs.
Practical Info
Plugs are Type A/B at 120V. English is the primary language. Uber and Lyft serve all of the host cities. WiFi is generally free at hotels, cafes, and airports. Grab an eSIM or prepaid SIM on arrival for mobile data. Public transport runs the gamut — strong in New York, weak in Dallas and Houston.
A/B plugs, 127V — same as US. Spanish is dominant but tourist areas and stadium zones see plenty of English. Both Uber and DiDi cover all three host cities. Telcel or AT&T Mexico SIMs at the airport keep data and calls cheap.
Type A/B outlets, 120V (US-compatible). English in Toronto, English plus French in Vancouver. Uber covers both cities. Transit is dependable — Toronto's TTC and Vancouver's SkyTrain both reach the stadiums. Canadian carriers are expensive; consider an eSIM or prepaid plan as a visitor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which airline gives Uganda the cheapest route to the US?

Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, consistently. The EBB to ADD hop is 90 minutes and connects into Ethiopian's own daily non-stops to Chicago (ORD), Washington Dulles (IAD) and Detroit (DTW), plus weekly Los Angeles (LAX) via Dublin. Booking a single through-ticket from EBB to any of those US host cities routinely beats Emirates, Qatar and Kenya Airways by UGX 200,000 to UGX 700,000 on comparable dates. Ethiopian's Star Alliance membership also means onward United connections in the US count toward ShebaMiles.

Do Ugandan citizens need a visa for the USA, Mexico and Canada?

Yes to all three. The US B1/B2 visa requires DS-160 completion, a USD 185 fee, and in-person interview at the US Embassy in Kampala (Nsambya). Wait times for first-time applicants currently run three to six months, and slots thin further as 2026 approaches. Canada requires a Temporary Resident Visa with biometrics at the Kampala VAC, processed in 40 to 80 days. Mexico accepts Ugandan applicants at the Mexican Embassy in Nairobi or waives consular requirements if you already hold valid US, Canadian, UK or Schengen visas.

How long does the full journey from Kampala to a US host city take?

Door-to-door from Kampala to Chicago on the fastest Ethiopian routing runs roughly 22 to 24 hours: Kampala to Entebbe transfer (1 to 2 hours on the expressway), EBB to ADD flight (1.5 hours), connection (2 to 4 hours), ADD to ORD direct (13 hours), plus US customs and local transfer. Washington Dulles and Detroit are similar. New York, Boston or Philadelphia via IAD adds an extra two-hour domestic leg. West Coast matches (LAX, Seattle, San Francisco) typically take 26 to 30 hours total — best to build in a recovery night before a match.

What is the smart move when applying for the US visa from Uganda?

Start the DS-160 the moment your match ticket is confirmed — do not wait for flight booking. Book the Kampala interview slot as soon as one appears even if the date is months out, because cancellations open sooner slots. Prepare your ticket evidence, bank statements, employer letter and accommodation plan in a single portfolio. If the Kampala wait is longer than Nairobi's, the US State Department allows applying at any embassy worldwide — but your ties-to-Uganda evidence must still be airtight. Some Ugandan applicants book Nairobi interviews for faster processing, which is legal and documented.

Is there a way to spread the cost of a World Cup trip from Uganda?

Some Ugandan banks and airline partners offer instalment plans — Stanbic, Absa and Centenary Bank have travel finance products that spread airfare across 6 to 12 months. Ethiopian Airlines occasionally runs promotions with local banks for World Cup-era bookings. Be careful of interest rates on credit card instalments; paying cash and booking early usually beats 18 percent APR on a stretched repayment. Separately, group bookings of six or more travelers can unlock discounted Ethiopian corporate rates through Kampala-based travel agencies.

What health and insurance preparation do I need from Uganda?

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for departure from Uganda even though the US does not require it on arrival — you need the certificate for re-entry to Uganda afterwards. Routine vaccinations should be current (MMR, Tdap). Buy travel medical insurance with at least USD 100,000 emergency medical cover, because US hospital costs for a single ER visit can exceed UGX 30 million. Local Ugandan insurers UAP, Jubilee and ICEA all issue suitable policies — verify the policy explicitly covers the USA, as a few cheaper plans silently exclude North America.
